Hello and welcome to 60 Seconds with Sergio. I am your host, Sergio Cabanas, Attorney-at-Law here in Florida. Thank you for joining me today. Today’s question is: “Sergio, I just received this legal paperwork from the court relating to a divorce that was filed by my spouse.” “What should I do?”
Well, divorce is a legal process, much like any other legal process. It should never be ignored. In fact, it has to be handled very carefully and on a very timely basis.
Think of a divorce like a dangerous infection. It should not be ignored, and in fact you should see professional help to treat it as soon as possible.
Otherwise, it can end up having some dangerous, horrible results. Once you are served with legal paperwork like a lawsuit, which is what a divorce is, you have the obligation to file a proper legal response within 20 days. It is possible to seek an extension on a limited basis, again, depending on the circumstances.
You should actually take this time to meet with several attorneys who can give you some good legal advice on how to best handle this situation as quickly and as cost-effectively as possible. I hope this short video provided you some guidance on how to best handle this legal paperwork that you received from a process server. Thank you again for joining me today. And as always, stay informed so you can stay strong.
