Rooted in Resilience: Sergio’s Story Begins in Miami

Sergio Cabanas was born in Puerto Rico to a Cuban family shaped by hardship, hope, and an unshakable belief in starting over. Years before his birth, Sergio’s family was forced to flee Cuba after the Castro regime seized their family farm—upending generations of work in a single stroke. With nothing but grit and a dream of freedom, they landed in Miami then moved to Puerto Rico, determined to build a life in a place where that kind of loss could never happen again.

Raised by a hardworking father who became an engineer for local hotels, Sergio grew up with a message he would never forget: “They can take everything from you, but never your education.” That mantra became a cornerstone of his identity. While other kids were focused on fun, Sergio was focused on the future. His father encouraged him to pursue the highest level of education possible—not just as a path to success, but as a shield against ever being powerless.

Why Law, and Why Family Law

While his siblings pursued careers in medicine, Sergio felt drawn in a different direction. As a kid, he would watch courtroom dramas on TV and feel something stir inside him—the power of words, justice, and fighting fiercely for others. He didn’t just want a profession—he wanted a mission. He would be the first lawyer in the family, and his father couldn’t have been prouder.

Sergio attended Berry University in Georgia, where he met his future wife during a weekend outdoor adventure camp for extra credit. When he went on to attend American University, Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C., she came with him—landing a prestigious role at KPMG while he focused on law school. After graduation, they moved to Florida, fulfilling a lifelong dream Sergio’s father had cherished since his youth. Though Sergio was already a U.S. citizen by birth, he watched with pride as his father became a naturalized American—finally part of the country he had risked everything to reach.

But Sergio’s story isn’t just about education and perseverance—it’s about pain, too.

As a child, he lived through a brutal family divorce that spanned years and cost tens of thousands of dollars. The attorneys on both sides dragged the case through unnecessary conflict, inflicting damage far beyond what was needed. When it was over, Sergio’s mother moved him to the U.S., and he was separated from the father he loved for many painful years. That experience left a deep scar—and planted an even deeper conviction.

He made a vow: “If I ever become a lawyer, I will never allow what happened to my family to happen to anyone else.”

That promise shaped the foundation of Divorce Lawyers | Cabanas Law Firm. Sergio didn’t just want to be a lawyer. He wanted to be the kind of advocate who protects families from the system that nearly destroyed his own.

Our Story

From Real Estate to Rebuilding Lives

Divorce Lawyers | Cabanas Law Firm began far from the polished offices we have today. Back in 2008, Sergio Cabanas was running a real estate business that looked successful on the outside—until the market crashed. In a matter of months, millions in profit turned into millions in debt. Friends, family, and investors who had trusted him were looking for answers. Sergio didn’t hide. He took responsibility—and then, he started over.

The Humble Beginning

With nothing but two filing cabinets and an old door laid across them as a makeshift desk, Sergio grabbed the nearest phone and got to work. No office, no staff, just one mission: help others going through the same devastation he was. He started cold calling the community, speaking to families in crisis, and even went door-to-door—yes, a lawyer knocking on doors—to help people save their homes from foreclosure. That grit, humility, and relentless service mindset still drive us today.

The Evolution

As the needs of the community changed, so did the firm. What started with foreclosure defense expanded into bankruptcy, debt settlement, landlord-tenant disputes, then estate planning and family law. But we found our true calling in divorce law. We’ve since become one of the largest divorce-only law firms in Florida, with offices across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County.

Sergio leads as Managing Partner. His wife keeps our operations in order. Sebastian drives marketing strategy, and Victor initiates client relationships with heart. We believe in the power of family—even when helping others transition out of one.
