Attorney for Child Support in Broward and Miami-Dade County

How is Child Support Calculated?
Child Support in Florida
In Florida, children have the right to receive financial support from both parents, even if they never married. The support is required to last until they turn 18 or graduate from high school, in certain circumstances. Additionally, disabled children might be eligible to receive support through adulthood.
With more than 60 years of combined experience, our child support attorneys are well-versed in this subject and can help you calculate fair payments based on financial information and circumstances. In addition, our certified mediators can facilitate an agreement between both parties. Contact our firm today to discuss child support and other issues, such as custody.
How Is Child Support Calculated?
Child support is calculated based on numerous factors, including:
- Net income of both parents
- Number of overnights the child spends with each parent
- Costs of daycare and education
- Health insurance costs paid by the parents
- Number of children
Special circumstances, such as expenses to care for special needs children, are considered as well. Because of the complicated nature of child support, it is wise to contact an attorney before moving forward.

Child Support For High-net-worth Parents
In most cases, the family court follows the state’s child support guidelines when ordering support. The guidelines include a schedule based on the combined income of the parents, but it stops at $12,000 a month. If you or your former partner has a high net worth, the judge can deviate from the child support guidelines and consider unique factors before creating the order.
In some cases, the family court uses the basic child support guidelines as a starting point. However, after getting the amount from the guidelines, the judge might choose to reduce it. Generally, the reduction is five percent, although the judge can reduce it by more if a higher payment would be “unjust or inappropriate.”
Our firm has decades of combined experience in matters related to high-net-worth child support orders. We understand the special circumstances involved in these situations and are available to help. Contact our firm today to schedule a consultation with a child support attorney.
Income And Expenses
Both parties must disclose their monthly incomes before calculating child support. However, some people are confused about what this means and think they only have to report job income. That is one component, but you also must report any other money that you receive. This includes interest and dividends earned, spousal support, and income from estates, trusts, and royalties.
You also must provide a list of expenses to be deducted from your gross monthly income. After deducting your expenses, you will arrive at your net monthly income, which will be used to calculate child support.
It is vital that both parties provide accurate financial affidavits for calculating child support. Our child support attorney can help you go through your financial information to ensure everything is included. We can also validate the other party’s financial information to ensure it is accurate.
Enforcing Child Support Orders
Do you have a support order in place, but the other party is not keeping up with his or her financial obligations? This is unfair to both you and your child, and you need a swift remedy. Our child support attorneys can take quick action to hold the other party accountable. This might include submitting a petition for civil contempt of court to enforce the order. The non-paying party will face incarceration and other penalties if he or she still refuses to pay. There are other legal remedies as well, so contact our child support attorney to discuss your case.
Child Support Modification
Either party can petition to modify child support due to a substantial change in circumstances, such as job loss or increased costs related to the child. Based on the evidence, the judge can then increase or decrease the support order. Modifying child support is complicated, so contact our firm before moving forward. Our child support attorney can evaluate your situation to determine if you qualify for a modification. If so, we can guide you through the process.
